Weekend Project: A Closet Purge

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I want company. Let’s do a closet purge this weekend. A nice little decluttering and a closet reset. Are you in?

Why I Am Recommending A Closet Purge

Here is the thing. Our closet should not overwhelm us or make us feel bad about ourselves. We should feel comfortable and confident in our clothes.

Don’t hang on to old clothes that fit a past version of you. And don’t continue buying or hoarding items for ‘future you’.

It is time to build a wardrobe and develop a personal style that suits your actual lifestyle and that makes you feel good and special your body exactly as you are today because you are special simply by existing and living.

So let’s begin.

First we are taking everything out of the closet and look at the space you have, all that room you could possibly have if you decide to let go of a few items that no longer serve you.

Now the next step is to remove the items (you don’t have to toss them just yet) that you haven’t used or worn in the last six months. These could be items , shoes, clothes, bags whatever it might be that you simply no longer reach for. In your weekly life that you currently lead they don’t fit in.

Examine the quality of the items and see what you may want to revisit in a few months or remove temporarily and set aside or bag it for future checks. Look at what you really want to let go of that is in good condition and that can go to a friend or a charity and donate.

Now look at the items that are worn, frayed or simply old and just toss them. Also get rid of the things that no longer fit or are suitable for your current lifestyle.

If you have new items or almost new items that you bought for a some version of yourself that you imagine you will become someday in the future, give them away too.

Now let’s audit, what are the gaps in your personal style and wardrobe that you need for your current life. Make a list, go on Pinterest, get inspired, save some pins or create new board for your style refresh or remix. Visit your favourite stores or online retailers and see what those things cost and make a plan, create a budget and start your style update.

I hope this helps. It helped me frame something that I have been mulling over for a few weeks and yes I will also be doing this project.

Happy weekend!

  1. I do regular closet clean outs. I’m big on getting rid of what’s not serving me or my style at the moment. Thanks for the reminder to do one soon.
