MJV Bookish Thoughts

Readers’ Problems Book Tag

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I am doing the readers’ problems book tag.  Again I wasn’t tagged by anyone.

But I watched Priscilla’s  BookTube video and was inspired:

Reader’s Problems Book Tag

You have 20,000 books on your TBR. How in the world do you decide what to read next?

This is so far out. I really can’t imagine having 20,000 books that’s a full library or a couple of libraries in Jamaica. I would be so overwhelmed if I had that many choices.

But I won’t skipped the first question of the readers’ problems book tag. So, I would choose a genre then grab the first book I find in that genre and I’d read that book.

You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you quit or are you committed?

Quit. At this point I have no problems DNFing books. When I get to this point  I may also pause books until I am ready to resume them. And, I have a special Goodreads shelf for these books, paused not quite at dnf.

I am a mood reader and I often start multiple books at a time, and when I get distracted by another book, I pause a few.

The end of the year is coming and you’re so close, but so far away on your Goodreads reading challenge. Do you try to catch up and how?

Oh this Goodreads reading challenge anxiety is real. Last year I fell short of my goals. Therefore in 2018,  my reading goals are manageable, I aim to read 50 books. So far I’ve read 28 books in 2018. I am confident I will meet my 2018 reading goals.

The covers of a series you love do not match. How do you cope?

I don’t care. This is weird to me.

Everyone and their mother loves a book you really don’t like. Who do you bond with over shared feelings?

No one. My partner will hear me rant and rave about books but he isn’t engaging just there listening to me chat on. Plus, I have this sweet post of internet called MJV, I will share my feelings here. Just sharing makes me feel better.

You’re reading a book and you are about to start crying in public. How do you deal?

I go to the bathroom and cry there. If there is no bathroom I walk it off and stop reading the tears inducing book.

A sequel of a book you loved just came out, but you’ve forgotten a lot from the prior novel. Will you re-read the book? Skip the sequel? Try to find a synopsis on Goodreads? Cry in frustration?

I keep reading. Almost every sequel I’ve read has some sort of synopsis style chapter that brings up the events of the previous book.

You do not want anyone borrowing your books. How do you politely tell people nope when they ask?

I am OK lending my books to my close friends. Sharing is caring.

You’ve picked up and put down five books in the last month. How do you get over your reading slump?

This happened to me in April, I had eight books on my currently reading list. When I hit a reading slump, I usually take a reading break and enjoy a solid weekend of Netflix bingeing. Then, I’ll get out of the reading slump by starting a fresh book not any of the books I was struggling with.

There are so many new books coming out that you’re dying to read! How many do you actually buy?

I don’t buy that many books. I usually read NetGalley and few Edelweiss ARCS. Then after I’ve read these books, only if I love them do I buy them. However, last month I started a new book buying routine. I buy books from Book Depository because free shipping. I am still selective and I will miss release dates but I am buying more books.

After you’ve bought the new books you can’t wait to get to, how long do they sit on your shelf before you get to them?

Maybe a few weeks. In the past it was months before I got to a book because I was buying mostly e-books. But now if its a physical copy of a book I bought, I start reading within a week or two of purchasing. I’ve already read one of the books I purchased in April and I plan to read the second one next week. At the moment, I am reader not a collector of books.

This was so much fun.

    Hi Chantel!

Thanks for the shoutout! I was happy to see your post. I laughed when you said you run to the bathroom to cry or walk it off…I forgot to answer this question in my tag but I usually fake it and blame allergies if I cry in public lol.

Brown Girl in the Ring is on my radar and I need to get some Nalo Hopkinson in my life. I hope you are loving it. I am currently buddy reading Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya and Dread Nation by Justina Ireland! Both are great!

    Happy reading,
    Priscilla (Bookie Charm)

      Hi Priscilla,

Thanks for reading and commenting. You inspired this blog post, thanks so much.

I am loving Brown Girl in the Ring, there are so many Caribbean folklore references and as a Jamaican it feels fantastic to see our cultural heritage on display.

And I will check out Bless Me Ultima and Dread Nation. I’ve heard of Dread Nation and now you’ve added two books to my Goodreads want to read. Thanks.
